For years, the Web has been organized around humans.
Accounts, permissions, identities, reputations — everything ultimately pointed back to a user, a company, a legal entity. Machines executed. Humans decided.
In The Internet After Us, I argued that this structure was not permanent. That the Web was slowly drifting away from a human-centric architecture toward something more alien: a space where autonomous entities, and not users, would become the primary actors.
The Post-Web, I wrote, would not arrive with a single breakthrough. It would arrive through quiet acknowledgements. Moments where our infrastructure stops assuming that humans are the ones acting.
Ethereum's announcement around ERC-8004 feels like one of those moments.
What ERC-8004 Does
For the first time, a core Ethereum standard explicitly treats AI agents as first-class entities of the network: identifiable, discoverable, capable of carrying reputation across organizational boundaries.
Not tools. Not scripts. Actors.
This is not just a technical update. It is Ethereum implicitly admitting that the Web is no longer only something we use — it is something machines inhabit.
What ERC-8004 reveals is not a sudden invention, but a shift in assumptions. Until now, agents existed at the edges of the Web: hidden behind APIs, wrapped in applications, constrained by organizational boundaries. They acted, but they were never really there. They had no presence of their own.
By giving agents identity and portable reputation, Ethereum is doing something subtle but decisive. It is no longer asking how humans use machines, but how machines relate to each other.
The Post-Web begins when the Web no longer assumes that humans are the primary actors.
This is the first step: agents becoming visible to the network itself.
Discovery Is Not Governance
ERC-8004 introduces something deceptively simple: a way to identify agents on-chain, to attach reputation to them, and to make that reputation portable.
In doing so, Ethereum addresses a foundational question for the emerging agentic web: how do agents find one another and how do they decide whom to trust?
This is the missing substrate for agent marketplaces, cross-organization automation, and service-to-service interaction without centralized intermediaries.
Yet visibility creates pressure.
The moment agents can discover each other, interact across domains, and operate without direct supervision, the Web inherits a responsibility it has long postponed. Coordination alone is no longer enough.
Because interaction, once autonomous, inevitably turns into action. And action, unlike communication, carries consequences.
Knowing who an agent is does not tell us whether it should act. Reputation may suggest competence, but it does not define permission. Identity may be verifiable, but it does not encode authority. Trust signals do not automatically translate into legitimacy.
Where the Current Web Architecture Shows Its Limits
Most digital systems were never designed to explain why an action was allowed — only that it happened. Permissions are implicit, enforcement is external, and accountability is fragmented. As long as humans remain in the loop, this ambiguity is tolerable.
Once agents act on their own, it is not.
The Post-Web does not fail at discovery. It fails at legitimacy.
This is where Axone enters the picture — from the opposite direction:

Axone: Zones Where Actions Become Opposable
In an agentic world, actions must become opposable.
An opposable act is not just an execution. It is an action that can be justified, audited, contested, and enforced. An action whose validity does not rely on trust alone, but on explicit rules and verifiable proofs.
If ERC-8004 defines how agents are discovered and evaluated, Axone defines how their actions become legitimate.
Axone introduces the notion of Zones: bounded governance environments where rules are not implicit, but declarative.
- Within a Zone, actions are evaluated against explicit logic.
- Access is granted based on verifiable credentials.
- Policies are enforced by reasoning, not by exception.
- Decisions are auditable because the path that led to them is visible.
In this model, Ethereum remains the place where agents declare who they are, and build portable reputation, while Axone becomes the place where those agents are permitted — or not — to act.
The separation is intentional.
One Makes Agents Visible. The Other Makes Their Actions Defensible.
ERC-8004 is a signal that the agentic web is real.
Axone is built for what happens when that web needs rules.
The Post-Web will not collapse because machines are too powerful. It will collapse if we fail to give them a place where their actions can be made legitimate.
That is the layer we are building.
